A Monthly Letter on Life as a Creative

Spill the Tea: Website Progress, Art Agent Search, & Feeling Overwhelmed ☕️

Published about 1 month ago • 3 min read

Hey Reader,

This month's newsletter is all about updates, overcoming creative roadblocks, and a bit of industry news. So let's dive in shall we?

STUDIO NEWS

WEBSITE MAKEOVER IN PROGRESS

I've been heads-down working on a brand new website! I'm focusing on making it SEO-friendly (think fancy search engine talk that helps people find me online) and giving each page a content refresh.

What started as adding two new pages quickly snowballed into a colour scheme and layout makeover. (Anyone else ever get caught in that project-creep zone?) But hey, the good news is I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! Just a few more tweaks and I'm on track for an end-of-April launch, just like I mentioned last month.

Here's a sneak peek to get you excited!

ART AGENT UPDATE

Remember how I mentioned searching for an art agent? Well, things have taken an interesting turn.

Last year, I tried working with an agency for three months. It was a valuable experience, but ultimately the workload felt overwhelming on top of my full-time job and I didn't feel like I was a good fit for their market.

Here's the exciting part! I'm currently in talks with a UK agency specializing in greeting cards. Their focus aligns perfectly with mine, and they seem to love my work! We're still getting to know each other, so fingers crossed for a positive collaboration!

TAMING THE TO-DO LIST MONSTER

Anyone else ever feel like your to-do list is a monster you can't slay? That's been me lately! The website revamp has been taking up a lot of mental space, and I haven't created any new art since the beginning of the year (besides my monthly wallpapers, of course!). While it's a bit of a bummer, I'm reminding myself that sometimes admin work takes priority, especially when you're a one-person team. One step at a time, right?

NEWSLETTER SURVEY

I’d love to ask if you’d be interested in filling out a little survey about my letters to you. I want to get your thoughts on what you like and what can be improved as well as what I can bring to the table for next year! You can share your thoughts here or reply to this email. I can’t wait to hear your ideas!

NO NEW ARTWORK

No new art this month (see overwhelm monster, above), but in the spirit of keeping things inspiring, I thought I'd share some of my favourite seasonal pieces with you. Hopefully, I'll have something fresh to show off next month!

Are you looking to collaborate on a project or maybe you're interested in licensing my artwork? I'd love to hear from you!

ARTIST RESOURCES

I love sharing interesting things I’ve found online that are related to art or surface design! Maybe you’re already in the loop but if not I hope to introduce you to some new courses, challenges, blog posts, and anything else I find fun and interesting that I think you might also enjoy!

So let’s begin!

CANVA ACQUIRES AFFINITY

Did you hear the big news? Canva bought Affinity! My initial reaction? A big ol' "NOOOOO!" But I'm holding off on judgment until the dust settles.

Many share my concerns. Will Affinity's one-time fee disappear in favour of a subscription model? Will the quality suffer as features move to Canva? What about the impact of Canva's AI on Affinity products?

The community seems pretty worried. For those considering switching from Adobe to Affinity (like myself), this throws a wrench in the plan. Do we invest in Affinity now, or wait and see what unfolds in a year? Let me know your thoughts!
